As a fatty I have always had dreams of being a fit person who can run 5k's, or go out and go running for fun and health. I want to bound through the forest on well established trails in search of new adventures, I want to ride my bike without the super huge comfy seat, I want to try snowboarding without the worry of causing an avalanche when I fall.
Some days I think I am this person until I look in the mirror and remember that, "Oh yeah...I'm a fatty."
My goal of running a 5k was prompted by a friend who asked if anyone was interested. I've always been interested, it's just a matter of DOING IT. So I said sure. The goal has been set. It's The Race For the Cure in Portland, OR on September 20th 2009. 10 weeks from my training start date.
I actually started training yesterday, Sunday the 12th of July. I'm using Podrunner:Intervals put out by DJ Steve Boy. You can find them for FREE on itunes.
Yesterday morning, I headed to the local middle school track with my i pod and tennis shoes on. It was a beautiful summer morning here in the pacific northwest, full of drizzle. I warmed up with a lap of walking and then did some stretching. I was very glad to find that the only other people using the track at the time were an older couple. I was afraid the man was going to keel over, but he just kept plugging away. He was a good source of inspiration. Thank you dude.
Anyway, after stretching I hit play on my ipod and started the interval sets. They are running for 30 seconds and walking for 90 seconds. Let me tell you, 30 seconds never seemed so freakin' long! By my 7th lap around that track I was wondering if it was ever going to end and then it did! I did another lap as a cool down and stretched again. I actually felt really good! Then in true fatty style, I headed to Tully's and got a triple grande non-fat white mocha. Hey, it was free.
Today my shins are a little sore. Which is always what I struggle with when trying to run. So if anyone has any tips or hints on how to avoid shin splints I will try them all!! My quads are a bit sore, but nothing that would stop me from going to the gym tonight.
My goal: To run a 5k in 10 weeks (even if I only run half I'll be happy).
To have lost 20 pounds in 10 weeks.
My plan: Interval training 3x per week
Gym cardio/weights 3x per week
Calorie intake: 1500/day.
So check back and see how I'm doing!!
